In May, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz rejected Volodymyr Zelensky’s invitation to visit Kiev, in response to the Ukrainian president’s opposition to the visit of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
However, the two leaders recently held a telephone conversation, where, as Zelensky said, he spoke openly with the German chief executive about his concerns about the treatment of prisoners of war by Russia.
“I discussed increasing defense support for Ukraine and ensuring global food security. I raised the issue of Russia’s observance of international law in the treatment of prisoners of war. “I stressed the importance of decisions on Ukraine’s integration into the European Union.” said Zelensky.
Zelensky did not provide further details on the conversation. Russian state media TASS reported the day before that over 1,000 Ukrainian soldiers, who have been handed over to the port city of Mariupol, are now being held on Russian territory and are being investigated.
Russia has already claimed to have opened a land corridor from Crimea annexed by it in 2014, allowing civilians and goods to pass through eastern Ukraine.
The Russian defense minister said the army, in co-operation with Russia’s central railway company, had restored 1,200 kilometers of train tracks and paved the way for “full circulation” between Russia, the Donbas region of eastern Ukraine and Crimea.
Ukrainian troops have already been embroiled in fierce street battles with Russian forces in Severodonetsk, where satellite images from Maxar Technologies show that military strikes have hit at least two hospitals.
