Members of the Assembly of Kosovo have discussed the warning of the Energy Regulatory Office (ERO) for the increase of electricity prices in Kosovo as a result of the increase of its price in the international market.
With over 40 signatures of MPs, the session was initiated by the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), just four days before ERO takes a decision on the proposal given so far with block-tariff.
The head of the PDK group, Abelard Tahiri, said that when the countries of the region began to take action after the warning of the electricity crisis, the Government of Kosovo remained negligent.
Tahiri said that Kosovar electricity generation capacities are about 950 megawatts, per hour while the demand is for every year during the winter season at 1.2 gigawatts per hour and every year is increasing.
“This year it has been announced that there will be a multiplication of the price of electricity and our institutions have remained indifferent to this situation. We are not here to analyze who caused the crisis because we do not control these factors, nor do they depend on us. “But we are here to face the inability of the government in the face of the crisis, because it has totally ignored this crisis until it directly hit the citizens of our country”, said Tahiri.
The head of the Parliamentary Group of the Vetëvendosje Movement, Mimoza Kusari-Lila, said that the parliamentary debate in the assembly was not called to propose solutions on how the government can overcome this energy crisis, but for a political war.
She said that the issue of energy is an issue which requires the language of facts, because even after lengthy discussions, the facts will eventually win.
The MP of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), Lumir Abdixhiku, in front of MPs and government representatives, said that they share the same belief with the citizens of Kosovo that the increase in electricity prices is unfair.
Abdixhiku said that one of the reasons why Kosovo is now facing the most difficult energy crisis is due to the delay in the response of institutions to this problem.
He said that the proposal from the Kosovo Regulatory Office for energy prices is unaffordable for the citizens.
“The Democratic League of Kosovo opposes the current proposal of Kosovo institutions. It is selective in payment, discriminatory in treatment, unannounced on time and above all it is an unaffordable proposal a week from today “, said Abdixhiku.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, said that the increase in electricity prices globally has occurred due to the enormous increase in gas demand, where as a result European countries have reduced their gas reserves and have increased demand. both for replenishment of reserves and for immediate power supply.
Kurti said that in addition to rising prices, in Kosovo during 2021 there has been an increase in demand for electricity, which has affected supply.
“I am not in favor of electricity cuts. However, if we are not to have electricity reductions, then we must understand that we must have either a state subsidy, or an increase in electricity prices, or a combination of both to find some golden mean in a situation where there is no good solution. There are no other options. With the peak of 1,384 gigawatts of capacity at 23:00, there are no other possibilities “, said Kurti.
He told the deputies that he is interested in creative ideas, but to ask for no power outages, no increase in prices and no subsidies from the government, is impossible.
The Energy Regulatory Office at the beginning of last week proposed to restore the energy block tariffs by proposing that the price of energy for those who consume over 600 kilowatts be doubled from February.
The Government of Kosovo also last week decided to allocate 75 million euros to subsidize the supply of electricity to citizens and businesses.
According to the Ministry of Economy, this was done to cope with the increase of electricity tariffs, which is expected to happen with the decision of the Energy Regulatory Office at the end of this month./AA/
