Rare footage has shown the birth of twin babies still inside their mother’s amniotic sacs in Brazil.
Doctors say fewer than one in 80,000 are born ‘en caul’ – still inside the protective membrane that surrounds the baby’s foetus.
The sac usually ruptures at the first signs of labor, but in this case the doctors opened it with their hands.
They did not know whether this could be called an anomaly at birth or just an unusual case.
The mother of twins, Cristiane Mucci, gave birth to her daughters Maria Cecilia and Maria Alice by Caesarian section on July 11.
The babies were then removed from their pouches at the Hospital de Nossa Senhora das Dores in Ponte Nova, southeast Brazil.
They were received by gynecologist Dr Emilio Garavini and were healthy, as the hospital described the birth as very special.
Although such cases are rare, the “en caul” birth is believed to be the fifth in Brazil.
A clinic in Sao Miguel do Oeste welcomed baby Davi Lucca Rosset Basso last September.
The Sun quoted the delivery doctor as saying: “It was a special birth, the baby came out still inside the bag and was moving around there.
Photographer Vanuza Lolatto had posted some images of the birth on her Instagram page, amid mixed reactions from users.
