Klimako Dogirama says he wanted to honor his grandfather when he participated in the javelin-throwing competition of Panamanian indigenous communities.
Dogirama is from the Embera community, and one of the 250 gaming competitors, who come from the country’s seven known indigenous populations.
This cultural festival transmits through sports warfare, the protection of the traditional lifestyle.
“Many of us have lost the traditions but this way we recover them again, we recover the culture of our ancestors”, says Dogirama.
In the Panama edition, participants compete in archery, darts, pole vault, tug of war, swimming and canoeing.
Cesar Sires, of the indigenous Ngabe tribe and organizer of the Games, says the event seeks to spread, preserve and promote indigenous cultures, through sporting activities.
“Our ancestors were warriors. “We try to teach the younger generations that these activities used to be important.”
