The massacre of forests has continued unabated for three decades while donors have opened the bag to protect them. From 1995 until today, the World Bank has spent a full 40 million dollars for the preservation of Albanian forests.
“Money has been and is full, the management of funds and grants that have come has been and leaves much to be desired, the Ministry of Environment must undertake projects related to climate change as there are endless funds”said the environmental expert, Mehmet Meta.
As a result of brutal interventions, Albania currently ranks last in the region and in Europe in terms of forest wealth.
According to a document prepared by the Ministry of Environment in 2018, in Albania forests are so poor that they produce only 57.7 m3 / ha of timber. To understand how far we are from the countries of the region, suffice it to say that Slovenia has an average rate of 346 m3 / ha of timber.
It is clear that Albania has forests only on the map, but there are no trees in the field. This is best proved even if we refer to the example of Montenegro. This country has a forest area almost the same as our country, but the volume of timber in Albania does not reach even half the level of Montenegro. Specifically, referring to the total volume of the standing forest fund, Albania is only 43% of Montenegro, while if we refer to the average volume in m3 / ha, Albania is as much as 45% of the neighboring country.
All this big difference translates into billions of euros missing.
To illustrate how colossal the loss from forests is let us take a concrete case. If we refer to the data provided to us by EFFIS, an international institution with a mission of forest protection, fires in Albania have burned 240,367 ha during the period 2009-2021. The value of destruction during this period from fires in the forest fund goes as much as 10% of the Gross Domestic Product of our country.
More specifically, by calculating the cost of replanting a ha of burnt area, the value of burnt timber and missing services, in just 12 years, we have set it on fire and squandered a staggering $ 1.5 billion fortune. While the total financial value of forests in our country estimated by the Ministry of Environment is about $ 4.2 billion.
a-240,367 x 5000 euro = 1,201,835,000 euro
b-55m3x240,367 x 20euro = 264,403,700
c- 240,367 ha x 57.8ton CO2 / ha x 4 Euro / ton = 55,572,850 Euro / vit.
A + B + C = 1,521,811,500 euros
“It is a colossal figure, while we have to wait a century to have those forests that we have burned.“, Said the environmental expert, Abdulla Diku.
