The Internet was reportedly shut down today (Wednesday) across Kazakhstan as the country was engulfed in violent protests in response to rising energy prices after the New Year.
‘NetBlocks’, the British organization that monitors internet freedom, described the situation as “mass extinction of the national internet. ”
Restrictions on network access and mobile services were reported as of Tuesday.
“The incident will most likely prevent the coverage of the growing anti-government protests,” the organization wrote.
TV broadcasts also had problems while networking KTK said it did not broadcast today from its power outage from its main headquarters.
Even the domestic networks NTK and Channel One Eurasia do not broadcast.
Yesterday protesters had raided the headquarters of the Mir 24 TV station in the largest city, Almaty. Staff were evacuated on time but protesters stayed there for some time damaging equipment.
Protesters also attacked a gun shop in the city where they were armed taking everything they had, store staff said.
Almaty was the epicenter of today’s violence against the mayor’s offices and the presidential residence.
Clashes with firearms were recorded between protesters and police.
The mayor’s office in the western city of Aktobe was also attacked today, according to reports from Russia.
