Russian supermodel Irina Shayk is accused of supporting the attack of Vladimir Putin’s army in Ukraine with an Instagram post showing the “Z” symbols placed on Russian tanks and military vehicles.
The 36-year-old – who was in a relationship with American actor Bradley Cooper before splitting in 2019 and previously with footballer Cristiano Ronaldo – had posted a traditional “Russian Olivier” salad on Instagram with the comment “Russianzz on [Wednesday].”
But spelling out the word “Russians” with an added “z” quickly raised the voices of critics who saw the post as an endorsement of the war ahead.
The numerous accusations came despite the model and actress having previously posted against the war with phrases like “No to War” — and has pledged to donate to the Red Cross in Ukraine.
The reactions show the difficulties and discrimination faced by Russian immigrants in the US and other Western countries since the start of the war.
Shayk’s questionable post is now no longer visible on her Instagram account and she has not commented on the controversy.
Shayk dated Cooper, 47, from 2015 to 2019 and they have a daughter together, Lea De Seine, born in Los Angeles in March 2017.
Before Cooper, the Russian beauty was in a relationship with Portuguese soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo for five years. Ronaldo announced their separation in early 2015.
