The anxiety for the end-of-year holidays is returning to both sides of the Atlantic with the rapid spread of the latest and most contagious variant of the coronavirus.
US President Joe Biden warned that Omicroni poses a threat to the US by creating a new wave of disease although the Delta variant was the one that contributed the most so far to the increase in the number of infected and dead.
There is still a lot of uncertainty about the new variant but, according to health officials it is known that Omicron spreads much faster than Delta.
The health ministers of the seven most industrialized countries in the world described the Omicron variant as “the biggest threat to public health in the world”, adding that “it is more important than ever for countries to work closely together”.
The worrying increase in the number of infected and the uncertainty about the new variant comes at a time when people plan to travel due to the end-of-year holidays, creating conditions for the virus to spread even more.
Reuters quotes the World Health Organization as saying that preliminary data show that Covid 19 vaccines may be less effective against Omicron, and that the risk of re-infection increases.
According to the WHO, more data will be needed to better understand the extent to which this variant manages to avoid the immune response that the body creates either from vaccines or from a previous infection.
