The picture shows the wreckage of a helicopter abandoned by US special forces after the attack where the ISIS leader in Syria, Abu Ibrahim al-Kurashi, was killed.
The U.S. said the operation was the heaviest blow to the militant organization since the assassination in a similar attack by its predecessor, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, in 2019.
“Thanks to the courage of our forces, we have eliminated Abu Ibrahim al-Kurashi,” said US President Joe Biden. Officials added that Kurashi after spotting the siege had detonated a bomb that killed him along with members of his family.
Syrian rescue teams said they had found the bodies of 13 victims after the attack. Several US helicopters were landed on the outskirts of the opposition town of Atmeh, in northern Idlib province near the border with Turkey.
The helicopter in sight was abandoned at the scene after a technical problem, and was later destroyed by an air strike by the US.
