The Israeli army today released footage of artillery fire on targets in Lebanon, in response to an artillery shell fired from there toward northern Israel.
The military said the strikes were in response to a rocket fired by militants in Lebanon, although the vehicle had caused no damage or casualties.
“In response to the ballistic missile launched tonight into northern Israel, artillery is currently hitting the source of the launch,” the military said in a statement.
The development comes amid fierce clashes between Israeli authorities and Palestinian believers who have been prevented from performing Ramadan prayers at a mosque in Jerusalem.
In addition to occupying land in Palestine, Israel is at war with its other Muslim neighbor Lebanon, where the militant group Hezbollah operates.
The two countries fought a serious conflict in 2006 when the Hezbollah group captured two Israeli soldiers.
In the 34-day conflict that followed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, were killed in Lebanon, and about 150 Israelis, mostly military.
The war ended with a UN-mediated ceasefire where the Lebanese army was allowed to deploy in border areas.
