The director of the US National Intelligence Agency, Avril Haines, has warned that sanctions and bans on the battlefield are unlikely to deter Russian President Vladimir Putin from his goal of invading Ukraine and could even increase his offensive in this state.
Speaking at a session of the US Congress on global security threats, Haines said on March 8 that the escalation of the cost of the war in Ukraine, which so far could have resulted in thousands of lost Russian lives, could anger Putin and t ‘change his view of what can be considered a victory.
“Our analysts estimate that Putin has little chance of being stopped by obstacles on the battlefield. “On the contrary, it could escalate the situation,” Haines said.
She has said the United States believes Moscow has underestimated Ukraine’s ability to withstand attacks and that it remains unclear whether Putin intends to control all of Ukraine.
If that’s the case, then, according to the US, it will have to deploy additional forces, or concentrate on smaller areas.
Moscow’s attack on Ukraine began in the early hours of February 24.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered a “special operation” to demilitarize Ukraine.
The Kremlin action has sparked outrage and been condemned in many parts of the world.
The United States and its allies have responded with harsh sanctions against Moscow.
