With prayers, flowers and flags at half-mast, Japan on Tuesday bid farewell to Shinzo Abe, a towering figure who dominated politics as the country’s longest-serving prime minister before he was killed at a campaign rally last week in a killing that shocked the world.
Amid a heavy police presence, many filed into Tokyo’s central Zojoji Temple for the private funeral service. Others lined the sidewalks nearby.
A car transported Abe’s body through the capital and then to the funeral hall.
The car passed the headquarters of Abe’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) before heading to the prime minister’s residence, where Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and other lawmakers welcomed the motorcade.
He then walked past the parliament building, where Abe first entered as a lawmaker in 1993, before arriving at the Kirigaya Funeral Hall.
Abe was Japan’s longest-serving post-war prime minister and one of its most influential politicians.
And his death has sent shockwaves through a country where gun violence is extremely rare.
