Japanese scientists have successfully tested the vaccine against cells that contribute to the aging process. They think they may have really progressed towards their goal of increasing life expectancy in humans.
Researchers at the University of Tokyo said the vaccine aims to regenerate old cells, forcing them to multiply. According to them, this vaccine works very well on old cells in adipose tissue and blood vessels.
One of the researchers, Professor Toru Minamino, pointed out that this vaccine could likely be used to treat sclerosis, diabetes and other age-related diseases.
Cells age when they stop multiplying, as cellular aging is thought to contribute to the aging process itself, as well as age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s and some cancers.
“Older cells secrete a variety of pathogens that disrupt tissue function,” said Dr. Salvador Masip, director of the Laboratory for Cancer and Aging Mechanisms.
Masip explained that the biological process of aging is very complex and that it is therefore unlikely that a single strategy will stop or completely change the aging process.
He said that starting from laboratory tests, the prevention of aging cells has extended the life of mice by 15 percent and other similar experiments have increased their lifespan to 35%.
Researchers do not yet know how long life expectancy can be.
“This is a very interesting issue that we have not agreed on yet. “Some think that there is a limit to human life expectancy (currently estimated at 130 years), while others think that in theory immortality is possible,” said Masip.
He stressed that it is still early to learn how long human life can be extended and whether there is a limit or not.
Research on “renewal” has advanced very quickly and many studies have been conducted recently. “The person who will take the first anti-aging pill may have been born,” he said.
