EU foreign policy chief Joseph Borrell said in a statement to the European Parliament today that EU aid to Ukraine was many times less than the cost of buying in Russia.
“The European Union has spent 35 billion euros (29 29 billion) on Russian fuel since the start of the war, compared to just 1 billion euros in arms for Ukraine. We must help Ukrainians defend themselves… We have given Ukraine 1 billion euros. It may seem like a lot, but 1 billion euros is what we pay Putin every day for the energy he gives us. ” said Borrell.
His remarks come as EU ambassadors meet to consider a fifth round of sanctions against Moscow, including a ban on Russian coal imports.
“Today we end coal, but this is only a small part of the bill,” he said Borrell told MEPs.
European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen has said the EU is working on additional measures, including restrictions on oil imports.
