The first Russian soldier will stand trial for the death of a 62-year-old man in Ukraine’s Sumy region, according to a statement released by the attorney general’s office this Wednesday.
The Prosecutor General’s Office said it had filed an indictment against Vadim Shishimari, commander of the 32010 military unit of the 4th Kantemirov Tank Division of the Moscow region.
The investigation alleges that the 21-year-old Russian killed a 62-year-old unarmed resident who was riding a bicycle along the road in the village of Chupakhivka in the Sumy region on 28 February.
According to the statement, Russian forces entered the village with a stolen car with perforated wheels. Along the way, they saw a man returning home and talking on the phone, according to the statement.
One of the Russians ordered a sergeant to kill a civilian so that he would not report to the Ukrainian army. Shishimarin was shot several times from the open window of a Kalashnikov car in the resident’s head, prosecutors claim.
“Shishimarin is currently in custody. Prosecutors and investigators of the SBU have gathered sufficient evidence for violation of the laws of war, combined with premeditated murder (Part 2 of Article 438 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). He faces up to 15 years in prison or life in prison“, Said the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, Iryna Venediktova in a statement on Facebook.
