In Kiev, at the moment, I do not go. I sent Cardinal Michael Czerny. Cardinal Konrad Krajewski also went there for the fourth time. Yes rune I feel I should not go. I have to go to Moscow first, I have to meet Putin. I too am a priest, I will do what I can. If Putin would open the door “: from words to deeds, Pope Francis thinks it is time to act, or at least try to make the Russian leader rationalize and stop the war in Ukraine.
In an interview with Corriere della Sera, the Holy Father confessed that on the first day of the war, he had received Volodymyr Zelenskyn on the phone, while Putin did not.
“For the last time, I talked to him in December about my birthday, but this time no, I did not take it. I wanted to make a clear gesture for the whole world to see, so I went to the Russian ambassador. I asked for explanations, I begged them to stop.
Then, adds the head of the Catholic Church, I asked Cardinal Parolin, after twenty days of war, to send Putin the message that I was ready to go to Moscow. We have not received an answer yet, but we continue to insist. How can you stop so much brutality? “Twenty-five years ago we experienced the same thing with Rwanda.” But what provoked this war? Probably, NATO’s approach to Russia’s push the Kremlin chief to open this conflict, he says, an anger that I do not know for sure if it has been provoked, but maybe yes. Then, there is a reflection on armaments in Ukraine: I do not know the answer, the Russians are now clear that now, few go to work and are thinking about other things. Wars are fought for this: to test the weapons we have produced ”!
