A few years ago Marcelline Budza founded her Women Revival of Hope group, giving them hope through coffee cultivation on Ixhi Island, in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The island is located in the middle of Lake Kivu and produces the famous Arabic version of coffee. Today the woman says she is happy because women working in plantations “could smile and be financially independent”.
“We have been working here for 9 years now and I feel that we have achieved some objectives. “Here women can smile and be independent,” she said, adding that women in the country are often financially excluded.
“Our coffee is consumed in the USA, Europe and Asia. “It is a specialty coffee that is valued on the international stage”, she adds.
On-site coffee production is concentrated in the vicinity of Lake Kivu.
The country has about 11,000 coffee growers producing two main varieties which are Robusta and Arabica.
