Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has convened a meeting of the National Security Council on May 13th, following Kosovo’s decision to apply for membership in the Council of Europe.
On May 12, the Deputy Prime Minister of Kosovo, Donika Gërvalla, physically submitted Kosovo’s application to this Council.
“With this action, Pristina has violated an agreement it has signed, which is the Washington Agreement. “They have brutally violated it,” Vucic said.
Kosovo and Serbia signed in September 2020 an agreement on the normalization of economic relations, known as the Washington Agreement.
With this agreement, Kosovo has agreed to a one-year moratorium on its efforts to join international organizations, while Serbia has agreed to a one-year moratorium – also on its campaign against the recognition of Kosovo as a state.
Under the Washington Accords, the moratoriums have already expired, but the US State Department has previously encouraged Kosovo and Serbia to continue them to enable progress in relations between the two countries.
“We should not get involved in hatred and enter into conflict psychosis, but offer strong responses in a responsible, rational and serious way,” Vucic said.
He said that Serbia will do its best to protect the state.
On March 16 this year, the Russian Federation was expelled from this Council, due to the start of unprovoked war in Ukraine.
In the absence of Russia, two thirds of the member states of this organization recognize the independence of Kosovo.
Given that decisions are made by majority, the possibility of Kosovo’s accession is real.
Kosovo declared independence in 2008, but has not yet managed to join several important international organizations.
It is not yet a member of the European Union, the World Trade Organization, the International Criminal Police Organization and others.
Serbia has been engaged in a campaign to thwart Kosovo, along with its main supporter in the international arena, Russia.
Kosovo, however, has managed to join several international organizations – among them: the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the Olympic Committee, the European Football Federation and the World Football Federation.
