Although the Minister of Health, Armend Zemaj stated this morning that the situation with COVID-19 in Kosovo is under control and there is no need for alarm, in the Infectious Diseases Clinic they say that the hospital capacities are already filled with patients infected with coronavirus.

There are currently 90 patients with coronavirus in this clinic and about 70 percent of them are on oxygen therapy. This was reported to KosovaPress by the infectologist, Izet Sadiku, who said that there are always 4 to 5 patients in intensive care.

“Actually we have the capacity filled with patients with COVID, we have 90 patients, but it is full because in a ward the placement of central oxygen is being done which will be a great help for the treatment of patients with COVID-19. While, the other wards that are available 90 beds are all filled with patients of whom 60 to 70 percent of them are with oxygen therapy and in fact the Infectious Diseases Clinic is constantly filled with patients. “We have some (patients) in intensive care, usually 4 to 5 patients are in serious condition, but even those who are in wards with oxygen therapy are patients whose condition could potentially worsen at any time,” he said. ai.

Sadiku says that in recent days there has been a slight increase in cases as a result of the release of measures taken weeks ago.

The Infectious Diseases Clinic infectologist believes that there will be no high increase in coronavirus cases.

“We have seen a slight increase in cases this week, of course this is due to the fact that we have all the measures released, then we have the number or movement that there was during the campaign but this issue will be noticed this week. But this number is not very large compared to the released measures that are, but the impact of the campaign will be noticed this week as well. I believe that so far we have had (increase of cases), but the hopes are that we will have a small increase, not a very large increase “, declared Sadiku.

Regarding the new variants that have already spread to different countries of the world, Sadiku says that apart from the 3 cases that were reported in January, there have been no more suspicious cases.

“The three patients did not have any special clinical specifications that we could distinguish these patients from other patients, at first we could not. What has been reported so far is that the new variants have a faster rate of spread but it is not yet known whether they have more severe clinical forms or not. Of course, there may be a larger number, but this test in our country is not done and to be done the test must be sent outside Kosovo. We notify the Institute when we have suspicious cases and they then send the samples. We did not have any (other) special case that we suspected “, said Sadiku.

Although it is now almost 1 year since the country registered the first cases of coronavirus, patients prescribed antiretroviral treatment Remdesivir must be provided by themselves.

“We have occasional shortages, usually what is from antiviral drugs like Favipiravir we have constantly, while remedisivir is missing and continues to be bought by citizens,” he said.

In the last 24 hours, 398 people have been registered with coronavirus, while a 39-year-old man from Drenas has lost the battle with this disease. Despite these figures, Kosovo has not yet provided the anti-COVID vaccine until its distribution has started in all countries of the region./KosovaPress/
