The United States is very close to sending a long-range missile system to Ukraine, known as the MLRS.
President Volodymyr Zelensky and other Ukrainian officials have urged the acquisition of the equipment in response to Russian bombing raids in the eastern Donbas region.
But President Joe Biden said the United States would not send Ukraine missile systems “that could strike Russia.”
It is thought that such a move would jeopardize the involvement of the US and its NATO allies in direct conflict with Moscow.
Russia continues to strike Severodonetsk and other parts of the Donbas with missiles, tanks and airstrikes, and sees the shipment of these weapons as a threat, saying the situation could escalate.
Kiev forces are already using US-delivered M777 howitzers, which have a range of about 25 km (16 miles). But the MLRS would allow Ukraine to reach far further targets.
