The Kremlin said on Friday it was “very important” to unblock exports, as Kiev and Moscow are expected to reach a deal that will help ease the global food crisis.
“It is very important to unblock supplies of fertilizers, food and grains to world markets,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
“It is a small amount of Ukrainian grain, but nevertheless it is very important that this grain reaches the world markets”, he added.
According to Radio Free Europe later on Friday, Kiev and Moscow are expected to sign a deal in Istanbul to restore Ukrainian grain exports from the Black Sea, even as Russian forces have launched a new artillery attack in eastern Ukraine.
Talks on unblocking grain exports have been mediated by the United Nations and Turkey.
Peskov said Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu will represent Moscow at the meeting in Istanbul.
He confirmed plans to sign the deal but did not comment further.
During a visit to Tehran earlier this week, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the West must lift restrictions on Russian grain exports if Moscow wants to facilitate Ukrainian grain exports.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has disrupted grain shipments from Ukraine, one of the world’s biggest exporters of wheat and other grains, raising fears that there could be a shortage of global food supplies.
