Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said it was impossible for Russia and France to reach an agreement on the Russia-Ukraine crisis.
Peskov said that the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Emmanuel Macron lasted more than 5 hours yesterday. “A constructive and truly comprehensive relationship has been established between Putin and Macron. This allows them to spend a lot of time talking to each other. “Also, the topics on the agenda are tense,” he said.
Commenting on the Financial Times’ claim that Putin and Macroni reached an agreement, Peskov said the claim was “false”.
“In this case, it is not possible for Moscow and Paris to reach an agreement. This is impossible. “Because France is a member of the European Union and a member of NATO and the leader here is not France, but the leadership is in another country,” he said.
Peskov stressed that Putin and Macron will soon hold a telephone conversation.
“The West is not ready to take our concerns into account”
Referring to the issue of security guarantees, Peskov said that the solution to this problem has not yet been found.
“We do not feel and do not see for now that our Western colleagues are ready to take our concerns into account. “This issue remains open and most important,” Peskov said.
“There is a great need to reduce tensions”
Referring to the situation in Ukraine, Peskov said: “There is a great need to reduce tensions. Because tensions are rising day by day. Western countries are sending military units, aircraft loaded with weapons and military equipment to Ukraine. Ukraine is conducting military maneuvers these days and is testing new models of equipment. Of course, all this means that it is provoking new waves. “Therefore, there is a need for de-escalation.”
“Russia is ready to meet with everyone”
Asked if Putin was ready to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Peskov said: “No one is giving up on this meeting. “If this meeting helps resolve the situation that has become the ‘Gordian knot’ in southeastern Ukraine, Russia will be ready to meet with everyone.”
“First, for what purpose, for what issues and for what conclusions will this meeting take place. “There is still no understanding for this,” Peskov said.
According to him, Russia and Belarus will hold the joint military exercise “Allied Determination-2022” in the territory of Belarus on February 10-20. Peskov said Russian military units would return to their homeland after the exercises.
He stressed that the date of the meeting between Putin and the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in Turkey has not been set yet.
