Chancellor Scholz has invited to Berlin the EU envoy for Kosovo-Serbia talks, Miroslav Lajcak, who will host a joint meeting with Prime Minister Kurti and President Vucic in the evening. The meeting is expected to be joined by the German envoy for the Western Balkans, Manuel Sarrazin.
Prime Minister Kurti said that the talks should be focused on mutual recognition “so not on recognition that comes at the end of a long process, but as a dialogue for agreements with mutual recognition at the center.”
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, meanwhile, said that he “believes that we will have the power to move forward in the talks with Pristina”, in today’s meeting.
Western diplomats have long been trying to secure a high-level political meeting between Kosovo and Serbia, and from tonight’s meeting they expect a relaxation that would help renew the process towards normalizing relations between the parties.
Earlier last week, US Assistant Secretary of State Karen Donfried said normalization was the way to counter Russia’s efforts to destabilize the Balkans.
Serbia is the only country in the region that has not imposed sanctions on Russia because of its aggression in Ukraine.
