The court hearing for Saimir Tahiri and Jaeld Çela that was expected to be held today has been postponed to January 5 at 10:00.
The reason for postponing the hearing is the absence of Jaeld Cela’s lawyers. Sources for the journalist Anila Hoxha suggest that the lawyer Gentian Rumano was fined with 5 thousand ALL while Petrit Ismaili was with a report.
Recall that the Supreme Court gave a procedural victory to Tahiri, when it decided to overturn the decision of 26 June 2020 of the Special Court of Appeals and return the case for review to another body of the Special Court of Appeal.
Tahiri was targeted by the judiciary in October 2017, after Italian authorities cracked down on a structured criminal group in marijuana trafficking, led by the Habilaj brothers – Tahiri’s relatives.
The prosecution charged Tahiri with drug trafficking and demanded his arrest, but the Socialist parliamentary majority blocked the arrest request and attacked the prosecution’s investigation as biased.
In September 2019, Tahiri was acquitted of drug trafficking charges and structured criminal group, but was sentenced by the Serious Crimes Court to 5 years in prison for abuse of office, a sentence which was converted to 3.4 years due to trial cut.
The first-instance decision was overturned by the Special Court of Appeals, which remanded the case for reconsideration.
