A private jet suspected of being used by sanctioned oligarch Roman Abramovich was spotted at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport on Monday, but the billionaire could not stay in the Jewish state.
Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid has openly stated that his country is not a safe haven for Russian businessmen, who have been targeted by international sanctions with freezing assets following the invasion of Ukraine.
“Israel is not going to be a way to help circumvent sanctions imposed on Russia by the United States and other Western countries,” Lapid said.
Although he did not name Abramovich by name, reliable sources told Reuters that the plane used by the football club’s owner, Chelsea, who also has Israeli and Portuguese citizenship, had left. Finally, it is reported that after a short stop in Turkey, the plane landed in Moscow.
Abramovich was sanctioned last week by the United Kingdom, an example of which was later followed by the EU, because of his ties to Vladimir Putin, but the billionaire denies having close relations with the Russian president.
