“Omicron” has become the dominant strain in the British capital, as hospitalization of the most infected with this strain has increased by 50 percent, since this variant of Covid first appeared on November 24.
According to the director of Public Health in London Prof. Kevin Fenton, the data suggest that super-strains constitute one of two new infections in the capital. Hospital admissions have doubled almost daily, while deaths are stable and it will be up to a month before fatalities start to increase due to the time when the condition worsens. At the national level, “Omicron” is one of the five cases with Covid and it is thought that it will pass “Delta” in the New Year period.
This situation has led the British press to announce the possibility of new restrictions in the coming days when it is estimated that infections could go up to 200 thousand every day and pubs and restaurants could be closed as staff will be affected by the virus that is spreading at astronomical rates.
Meanwhile, studies from South Africa say the Omicron is causing a third fewer hospitalizations than the Delta variant, and South African doctors have accused the London government of exaggerating the situation.
International travel is thought to be the cause of the widespread outbreak of this strain in London, one of the world’s largest air transport hubs. The end-of-year period, when international travel from London to Albanian territories increases, should be an alarm bell for the health authorities about the potential risk of the strain coming to Albania or Kosovo.
