US authorities unveiled in Los Angeles today what they call “ghost weapons” seized, handcrafted, illegally and self-assembled.
Special Agent Michael Hoffman said that their sale is widely done online by being sent in batches to the addresses of the customers, who then assemble them themselves.
Officials said such weapons could not be traced as they do not have serial numbers like weapons manufactured by legitimate factories.
The development comes after a US government campaign against these weapons, the distribution of which has increased tenfold in the last five years.
The new rules require that mounted parts of these weapons be subject to the same requirements as weapons legally sold on the market, according to officials.
They should include a serial number and come from licensed manufacturers that can be traced as long as they do this business.
