Authoritarian Belarusian leader Alyaksandr Lukashenko has said he is doing everything he can to help end Russia’s war with Ukraine, which has dragged on longer than he thought.
In an interview with the Associated Press on May 5, Lukashenka said Kiev had “provoked” Moscow by commenting on the Russian occupation of Ukraine.
Although he did not elaborate on how Ukraine provoked Russia before the start of the war, Lukashenko said there was information that Ukraine planned to attack Belarus as well.
The Belarusian leader has helped Russia in this conflict by freeing the territory of the state to launch attacks on Ukrainian territory.
Lukashenko has been criticized by the international community since claiming victory in the 2020 presidential election, which the opposition considers manipulated.
The Belarusian leader – who has been in power since 1994 – has faced mass protests, which he has sought to quell through harsh tactics.
Mr Lukashenko, 67, told the AP that he was doing “everything” he could to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
“I am not so immersed in this problem that I can say if everything goes according to plan, as the Russians say. “I want to emphasize once again, it seems to me that this operation is dragging on,” said Lukashenka from Minsk.
According to him, the use of nuclear weapons would be “unacceptable”, but he said he did not know if Russia has such plans.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and other senior officials have repeatedly mentioned the state’s nuclear arsenal since Putin launched the war in Ukraine on February 24.
Putin has put nuclear power on high alert a few days after the start of the invasion./REL
