French President Emmanuel Macron overcame a major obstacle on the path to re-election with an aggressive stance in the televised debate against far-right candidate Marine Le Pen, who polls have convinced a majority of viewers to vote for, although he is still seen as arrogant.
Among the points that gave Macron the upper hand was the argument for Le Pen’s ties to Russia and the deprivation of Muslim women of the right to wear headscarves in public.
In their only confrontation before the electorate said its word in Sunday’s runoff, President Macron appeared quite determined.
He argued that a loan that Le Pen’s party took in 2014 from a Czech-Russian bank puts it in an unfavorable position to face Moscow.
Emmanuel Macron also said the anti-immigration candidate’s plans to ban Muslim women in France from wearing headscarves in public would spark a “civil war” in the country with the largest Muslim population in Western Europe.
Marine Le Pen, on the other hand, tried to attract voters who are struggling with rising prices amid the aftermath of Russia’s war in Ukraine.
She said reducing the cost of living would be her priority if elected as France’s first female president while portraying herself as a candidate for voters who could not afford living.
Usually a powerful orator, Le Pen occasionally found it difficult to find the right words and had no fluency in response.
In some cases Le Pen also lacked its characteristic severity.
Le Pen has sought in this campaign to soften her image and remove the labeling as extremist, as has long been expressed criticism of her and her party.
In contrast Macroni appeared particularly confident in himself, sometimes turning to arrogance – a trait that his critics have consistently emphasized.
He was sitting with his arms crossed as he listened to Le Pen speak.
Isabelle Veyrat-Masson, an analyst at the French National Center for Scientific Research and specializing in political communication and media, says Macroni was bolder and that Le Penny was less aggressive than he was five years ago.
“I got the idea that Marine Le Pen had taken sedatives, she was speaking so slowly that it gave the impression that there was an imbalance between voice and image. Macroni spoke much more than she did because she spoke on more topics, while Le Penny spoke slowly and very softly, creating the impression that the microphones were not set up properly. It was a strange feeling. But perhaps that was her intention and she probably won something because she could not be accused of being aggressive, as has been described before. “But she lost points in the debate over her lack of fighting spirit, aggression, and presence.”
According to a poll, about 59% of those who followed the debate said Macron was more convincing. This suggests that the nearly three-hour showdown will not change the course of the election, with Macron leading according to all previous polls.
Voter polls have shown an increase in Macron’s lead over Le Pen to 56% to 44% since the first round on April 10, and analysts say the debate is unlikely to change voting intentions in favor of Le Pen.
