Four people are believed to have been killed today by an out-of-control knife attacker inside a hospital in Shanghai, as doctors and patients were seen running for their lives in terror.
Huangpu District police quickly surrounded Ruijin Hospital this morning after reports of stabbings.
When officers arrived at the hospital in the Chinese capital, they found the attacker holding a group of people hostage.
They said they opened fire after the man threatened to hurt the patients.
The shooting had led to the “removal of the danger from the attacker” and his current condition has not been disclosed by the authorities.
Chinese police said in a statement: “Police at the scene found the knife-wielding attacker holding a group of people hostage on the seventh floor of the hospital.”
“When the suspect tried to hurt the hostages or the police, the officers shot, wounding him and eliminating the danger,” the authorities said.
The statement added that four injured people who were being treated for their injuries “did not show signs of life”.
Currently, the attacker’s motives remain unknown.
Videos shared on social media showed the chaos as doctors and visitors dropped objects to the ground as they tried to leave.
Several doctors were seen pushing patients in wheelchairs, while one person was wheeled out of the building on a wheelchair.
In another video on social networks, dozens of shocked people are seen coming out of the building.
One of the witnesses told the media: “It’s shocking, what happened to this society?”
Mass crimes are rare in China, which bans firearms, but knife attacks are common.
Last month, a 23-year-old man was stabbed to death in broad daylight in the city of Ningbo, and footage of the attack went viral on social media.
While violence in Chinese hospitals is common in China, writes the British newspaper The Sun.
