The situation remains critical in Spain, where large fires have been active for several days. Most affected is the eastern part with thousands of hectares of burned pines and shrubs.
No casualties have been reported so far, and the cause of the massive fires is the high temperatures that have gripped Spain this summer.
According to REUTERS, hundreds of firefighters were on the ground trying to put out the blaze, along with 120 trucks and 19 planes, near the towns of Baldomar, Corbera d’Ebre and Castellar Ribera.
Most of the efforts were concentrated in Baldomar, where the blaze threatened 20,000 hectares of forests and agricultural land. Some isolated houses were evacuated as well as a children’s center with 54 minors.
As of June 5, the burned area in Spain was 34% smaller than the same period of 2021 and the lowest since 2018.
However, since last week the combination of hot weather, wind and storms has ignited fires across the country.
The scorching sun has hit Spain since the end of last week, in what is the earliest heat wave since 1981, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius.
