The closest ally of Russian President Viktor Medvedchuk in Ukraine has sought to exchange with Mariupol soldiers and residents.
The Ukrainian government says it has already conducted several prisoner exchanges with Russia, but none would be as high-profile as this. The Kremlin has previously stressed that Medvedchuk’s exchange was not urgent, as they say he is a foreign politician.
His wife Oksana Marchenko has already called on UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson to exchange her husband with Russian nationals captured by Russia in Mariupol. She also asked their relatives to influence him.
The new video seems designed to give a sense that Medvedchuk believes his future will be better placed in Russia than in a country where he was already under house arrest for treason.
