Prime Minister Edi Rama has revealed in a press conference what he talked with the EU High Representative, Josep Borell.
Edi Rama: We talked about the war in Ukraine and all its consequences that have appeared in Europe and not only, initially in the form of rising prices. We also discussed the role of Albania in the Security Council and Albania’s position in the same line with the EU in relation to Russia and Russian aggression on Ukraine, but of course part of the discussion was the further progress of Albania’s integration process in The EU and specifically the process for the formal opening of membership talks, which I believe Borell will speak for himself.
As for me, I have repeated once again what is known that Albania has chosen this position as its natural position and not that someone in Brussels, Berlin, Paris or even Washington has asked us. We are a proud member of a great alliance like NATO and we are also proud Europeans for our European and Albanian being that we see from Europe the door of our future. We are in this position today and moreover, this position is imposed on us by our children.
We talked about the issue of opening talks. This is a matter for the European Commission and the EU. The European Commission has said it should sit down at the table, the European Council could not do so due to a blockade on Northern Macedonia by Bulgaria. We need to sit down at the table as soon as possible, we will not miss a single minute of that little sleep we sleep in, and we will do the work as if the talks were open. The sooner the European Council does, the better it is spending a lot of time making promises and not keeping promises. The French presidency would do well to do it in June, but even if it does not, we will wait again. But we do not wait for a second to continue the work that brings us closer to EU standards.
I spoke about the necessity that if the EU has a plan to support countries either in facing the energy crisis or in facing the other consequences of the war, it should not leave the Western Balkans out as they did when they distributed vaccines. On the other hand, the project of the eighth corridor, which is a project, has been on the table for some time for the economic plan. I thank our friend for being more friend of our country and this region.
