The town and surroundings of Memaliaj for decades have lived mainly from the coal mine and with its closure after degradation residents focused on agriculture and livestock sectors even these difficult for the area due to problematic infrastructure and the distance that most villages have with the national road .
But despite this past in Memaliaj residents are discovering that tourism can provide a share of income. Hetem Bajrami who runs a guesthouse in the village of Gllava, one of the most remote in the area, shows that the level of reservations is quite good.
For the first time the municipality officially opened a tourist season bringing to attention the fact that the natural assets of the area and the first inns were visited last year by about 4200 visitors. The mine itself is planned to serve for tourism programs as an opportunity to tell the story of a city built in function of the coal mining industry.
Over the last decade alone almost 70% of the area’s active population has emigrated. If the axis connecting Memaliaj with Berat through the Buzi highlands became functional, it is believed that it would give another rhythm to tourist investments in this area rich in natural resources, lakes, forests and cultural monuments.
