Members of the European Parliament call on European institutions to grant Ukraine EU candidate status.
According to Ukrinform, this is stated in Article 37 of the European Parliament resolution on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, which was adopted today by a majority of votes.
“The European Parliament calls on the EU institutions to work towards granting EU candidate status to Ukraine, in accordance with Article 49 of the Treaty on European Union and on the basis of merit, and, in the meantime, to continue working towards integration. “in the EU common market along the lines of the Association Agreement”, the document states.
At today’s meeting of the EP, the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, the President of the European Council Charles Michel and the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen welcomed the official application of Ukraine for EU membership and spoke in support of this idea, as Ukraine has proved to be part of the European family. At the same time, as the President of the European Commission pointed out, this issue can be considered, practically after the end of the war started by the Russian Federation.
Russian President Vladimir Putin declared war on Ukraine on February 24 and launched a large-scale invasion. Russian troops have bombed and destroyed major infrastructure facilities.
