Moldovan Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita welcomed the moves to boost co-operation with the European Union, but said such initiatives could not replace the bloc’s membership process.
Moldova has pushed forward efforts to join the EU after Russia launched its occupation of Ukraine, a war which is threatening to spread to Moldova as well.
“We welcome any mechanism that brings us closer to each other, improving our cooperation, as long as these do not replace the path to membership.” said Gavrilita during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Earlier this month, French President Emmanuel Macron suggested that instead of offering membership in the European bloc, a parallel entity should be created, which could include aspiring countries such as Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova. He called this organization a “European political community” and said that it could include all European democracies that share the core values of the bloc.
But Gavrilita said only full membership in the bloc could offer full benefits to aspiring states and a stable place in a community with shared values, such as the EU.
“We strongly believe that membership in the European Union is in fact what delivers this peace, stability, prosperity based on values and we want to be part of the free world and this EU family.” she said./ REL
