Moscow is not giving much space to diplomacy, but continues to nurture fears of a Ukrainian invasion.
Exactly at the time when diplomatic efforts to avoid this scenario have intensified significantly. Russia has chosen to demonstrate force with giant military maneuvers in the Atlantic, Arctic, Pacific and Mediterranean.
The exercise, scheduled for January and February, will involve more than 140 ships, 60 aircraft and 1,000 other military equipment, the Russian Defense Ministry in Moscow said, according to Russian news agencies.
About 10,000 soldiers will take part in the exercise. The Russian Defense Ministry explained that the main purpose of the planned exercise is “to protect Russian national interests in the oceans and to counter threats to Russia from the oceans.”
The United States, for its part, is allowing the Baltic states to supply Ukraine with US-made weapons. The State Department announced that Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, as well as the United Kingdom, have received permission from their arsenals to send US-made military equipment to Ukraine, without specifying what kind of weapons it is.
Based on arms export control regulations, states must obtain permission from the US State Department before sending weapons received from the US to third countries.
