Most cases of the mysterious illness of American officials already known as “Havana Syndrome” have not been caused by foreign opponents, a CIA official said today.
Since 2016, US diplomats in various parts of the world have reported symptoms, prompting speculation that China or Russia may be responsible for possibly unknown radio attacks.
But in most of the approximately 1,000 cases analyzed by the CIA, officials said the condition was explained by “stress or natural causes.”
The publication of the conclusions has angered many who suffered from what they called “unconvincing” reports.
The CIA said it was still studying a number of unexplained cases, in which the possibility of the role of foreign powers has not been ruled out.
Americans affected by Havana Syndrome have reported dizziness, headaches, and a painful ringing in their ears. This was first reported in Cuba in 2016, but since then similar cases have been reported in Geneva, Berlin and other countries.
A CIA official told the BBC’s US partner CBS that “no evidence has been found of state agents involved in any of the incidents”.
Most cases can be explained by “medical or environmental conditions, such as previously undiagnosed diseases,” the official said.
He added that “it is unlikely that a foreign actor will carry out such a campaign with a weapon or mechanism.”
But the representative group of victims were not satisfied.
“This can not and should not be the last word on the issue, because it is neither definitive nor understandable,” said the Havana Syndrome victims’ group.
