The Files Authority has reacted after the speculations that the former president Ilir Meta is the politician with the initials IM, which turned out to be part of the secret files of the former State Security.
The authority emphasizes that all interested parties should follow the legal path for information on this issue, while adding that the right to information about former State Security files can be exercised by any affected or mentioned party.
The authority refutes information that refers to decisions and files of various citizens as part of daily work.
Ilir Meta denied the claims that he is the politician with the initials IM that was part of the secret files of the former State Security.
He challenged the authority of the files to make the documents public, while looking back on his past Ilir Meta remembered that in the Faculty of Economics where he studied there were dozens of students with the same initials, even one of his classmates had same name and last name.
Ilir Meta called it a political game, while strongly attacking the Files Authority, accusing it of falsifying documents, since according to him, since 1992, he has undergone all verifications and his past has come out clean.
He will not go to justice for the tarnishing of his name, as he says that he has not received any document from the File Authority, nor from the Speaker of the Assembly, for whom he indicated that he has lost respect.
The institution is waiting for the proposed legal changes, in order to carry out the relevant research and verifications for the cases, stressing that the cases referred to the Assembly are not subject to verification, due to the legal obstacle.

– The Authority for Information on the Documents of the former State Security came out with an official announcement on July 26, on the problems in verifying the purity of the image of officials, high public officials and central and local elected officials, information that was forwarded to them, with the relevant proposals, Parliament of Albania.
During this time, many interpretations have circulated on the information conveyed by the institution. The authority refutes the news that refer to decisions and files of various citizens, (such as No. 227, dated 27.05.2022) part of daily work, regularly published on the official website.
The institution invites all those interested to follow the legal path for information, based on law no. 119/2014, “On the right to information” and law no. 45/2015, amended. Any affected or named party can exercise the right to information about files of the former State Insurance. The authority verifies with professional responsibility any claim on referred or requested materials. Currently, the institution is processing requests for information on the announcement of July 26.
The Authority is not affected in the exercise of its activity for information and continues its work, based on legality, transparency, protection of the right to private life and personal data, protection of data that constitute classified information and cooperation between state institutions.
The institution is waiting for the proposed legal changes, to carry out the relevant research and verifications for the cases, which will take their treatment time. The cases referred to the Assembly are not subject to verification, due to the legal obstacle cited earlier.
In Albania, according to the law, it is forbidden to take a public duty by former employees of the state security, only for the leaders of the new bodies of justice. If the socialist majority is to draft a new bill that would ban the candidacy of politicians affiliated with the former security, it will need 84 votes along with a constitutional amendment.
