The Minister of Education, Arbërie Nagavci said that the employment of assistants for children with special needs is a priority for the Kurti Government and that as a minister, therefore it is being realized.
Nagavci wrote on Facebook that the topic of employment of assistants for children with special needs was raised and as a reminder, in 2017 as a member of the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo, I proposed an amendment for the employment of assistants for children with disabilities special needs.
“The amendment was not approved because it had not received the support of MPs from several parties, including those of the Democratic Party of Kosovo who are currently raising this issue. I’m glad that they have already reflected and understood the importance and need for hiring assistants. In the government program we have foreseen that every year of our government we will employ 100 assistants for these children, therefore we have planned them in the budget. There are currently 86 assistants employed in schools and 5 in Resource Centers.
Very soon we will hire 3 deaf community assistants. The employment of assistants is done in addition to their qualification, currently only 70 assistants are graduates and unemployed, therefore and in parallel with budgeting, we are preparing the necessary staff and this year we have started with the preparation of new groups of candidates. As Minister, we will carefully monitor the process of hiring assistants from municipalities and will ensure that by the end of our mandate we have at least 500 assistants in schools.
Beyond that, the Government has decided to declare 2022 “Year of Persons with Disabilities in the Republic of Kosovo” which shows our commitment in this regard. Within the activities, among others, it is foreseen the construction of slopes in 10 lower secondary schools and 5 upper secondary schools in 15 municipalities. “Also, the training of directors and teachers of upper secondary education is foreseen for the access and education of students with special needs and many, many other activities”, she wrote, assuring that they will not stop only with assistants, but will also engage in the employment of other support staff in schools.
Otherwise, yesterday in the plenary session where the Kosovo budget was voted, PDK MP Eliza Hoxha proposed to increase the budget for the education of children in need, in order to increase the number of assistants for these children.
