The first launch of a NASA rocket from a commercial location outside the United States took place by Australia’s Outback late Sunday, at a “historic” moment for the country’s space industry.
The rocket will enable astrophysical studies that can only be undertaken in the southern hemisphere, says NASA. The launch was also the first in Australia in more than 25 years.
The rocket is the first of three NASA to explode from the newly built Arnhem Space Center on the edge of Northern Territory.
Scientists hope this will help them study the influence of a star’s light on the habitation of nearby planets.
Australia has significantly stepped up its space efforts recently, revealing a defense agency focused on countering Russia and China’s space ambitions.
