The NATO alliance has reportedly accumulated 30,000 troops near Russia’s borders amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
The British Metro wrote that about 200 planes and 50 warships were sent to the north of Norway, several hundred kilometers away from the Kremlin.
The so-called “Cold Reaction” maneuvers are already held every year and normally have nothing to do with last month’s Russian attack on Ukraine, the alliance said.
Officials said the maneuvers had been prepared before Putin launched an attack on Kiev but that the latter had given them “added meaning”.
“The training campaign is very important for the readiness of Norway and its allies, where it will be practiced to strengthen its security,” said Norwegian Defense Minister Odd Roger Enoksen.
“We are not being organized by the Russian attack on Ukraine, but this is a motive to increase their significance,” he added.
Russia has reportedly rejected an offer to observe northern maneuvers, which are believed to be attended by 27 countries from Europe and North America.
Thousands of troops will practice on the ground and in the air until April 1, he told the Norwegian Armed Forces.
“We have provided the necessary information to Russia, which is essential for conflict prevention,” the statement added.
The announcement on NATO’s website read: “The maneuvers demonstrate NATO’s ability to deploy thousands of troops to the north, while strengthening the Alliance’s eastern flank.”
“The ‘Cold Response’ maneuvers create a fabricated scenario of an attack on Norway and the activation of the NATO collective defense clause,” the statement added.
