The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, has said that negotiations are expected to begin soon to revive the nuclear deal signed between Iran and world powers in 2015.
“We look forward to resuming talks in the coming days and breaking the blockade.”Borrell said at a joint conference with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in Tehran.
“Three months have passed and we need to speed up the work.”
Describing the meeting with Borrell as “long but positive”, Amir-Abdollahian said that Iran is ready to resume talks with world powers in the coming days.
“The important thing for Iran is to get the economic benefits from the 2015 agreement,” he said.
Under the 2015 agreement, Iran has agreed to limit nuclear activity in exchange for lifting Western-imposed sanctions.
The deal began not being implemented when former US President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the deal in 2018.
Washington has since imposed tough sanctions on Tehran, while the Iranian government, which denies intending to build a bomb, has begun to evade commitments made in the deal.
For more than a year, Iran has been negotiating with Britain, Germany, France, Russia and China, directly, and with the United States, indirectly, with a view to reviving the deal.
Negotiators are said to have been close to reaching an agreement in March, but talks stalled abruptly in April after Tehran and Washington blamed each other for not making enough political commitments to resolve contentious issues.
In early June, Tehran said it had begun removing 27 surveillance cameras from its nuclear facilities in Iran, further limiting the West’s ability to monitor the country’s nuclear program. Radio Free Europe
