The world’s only twins – nine Mali babies born all at the same time – are “in perfect health” as they celebrated their first birthday, their father said yesterday.
“They have started to crawl. “Some are sitting and can walk holding on to something,” Abdelkader Arby, a member of the Malian army, told the BBC.
The babies are still in the clinic in Morocco where they were born, while their 26-year-old mother, Halima Cissé, is also fine.
“It’s wonderful, all the babies are in perfect health, we are relieved,” said the father, who has just returned to Morocco for the first time in six months, along with the couple’s eldest daughter, three-year-old Souda.
They would organize a small celebration with the nurses and some neighbors of the house, says Mr. Arby.
The babies had broken the Guinness World Record for the largest number of children surviving a single birth.
Prior to their birth on May 4, 2021, Ms. Cissé had been flown to Morocco for specialized care by the government.
The mother and children currently live in a “specialized medical apartment” owned by the Ain Borja Clinic in the capital Casablanca, where they were born.
“Apart from my wife, there are also nurses who help us take care of the children,” adds the father.
The babies – five girls and four boys – were born after 30 weeks of pregnancy, ie almost 7 weeks premature and weighed from 500g to 1kg said Professor Youssef Alaoui, medical director of the Ain Borja clinic at the time of birth.
The boys were named Mohammed VI, Oumar, Elhadji and Bah, while the girls were named Kadidia, Fatouma, Hawa, Adama and Oumou.
Each of them has a unique character, says the father, thanking the government for helping and caring for the nine babies.
The details of Ms. Cisse’s birth are not clear, but multiple births are usually the result of artificial insemination treatment. In these cases, several eggs are fertilized simultaneously and implanted in the woman’s uterus to further increase the chances of pregnancy.
