North Korea is suspected of launching a ballistic missile at sea, the South Korean and Japanese military said on January 5.
The Ministry of Defense in Japan has said that North Korea has released what appeared to be a missile.
The Japanese Guard initially reported on the launch, saying it could be a ballistic missile, but without giving much detail.
South Korea’s chief of staff has said the North Koreans have fired a shell into western waters.
The launch comes after pro-government leader Kim Jong Un pledged to increase the state’s military capabilities.
In a speech last week, Kim did not specifically mention missiles or nuclear weapons, but said national defense needed to be strengthened.
UN Security Council resolutions ban the testing of all North Korean ballistic missiles and impose sanctions on Pyongyang’s weapons program.
Since the pandemic broke out, North Korea has closed its borders, slowing trade and blocking diplomatic meetings with physical presence.
