North Korea says it has successfully tested a new weapon, which it says will significantly increase their tactical nuclear capabilities. The photos, published by the local news agency, show the country’s leader Kim Jong-un smiling and applauding as he watches the launch of the new rocket.
Experts believe this is a sign that North Korea is planning to soon test a compact nuclear weapon or otherwise a tactical nuclear weapon.
North Korea halted nuclear testing in 2017. A year later, it blew up tunnels in its nuclear test site, a move seen as part of a diplomatic rapprochement with South Korea and the United States.

The timing of the test also coincides with events celebrating the birth anniversary of North Korean founder Kim II-sung.
