North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has reiterated warnings that Pyongyang could use its nuclear weapons for “preventive” purposes to counter hostile forces, North Korean state media reported on Saturday.
Kim told senior military officials that “in order to maintain the absolute supremacy” of North Korea’s armed forces, the state must be able to “prevent and deter all dangerous attempts and threatening movements. If necessary.” reported the KCNA news agency.
“Pyongyang must continue to build its arsenal so that it can have” overwhelming military power so that no force in the world can provoke it, “Kim said, adding that” this will guarantee the security of our country. ” .
Kim made similar comments during a military parade on April 25, when he said he could use his nuclear arsenal if North Korea’s “core interests” were threatened. Despite international sanctions, North Korea has redoubled its efforts to modernize its military and this year has tested a range of new weapons, while ignoring US offers of talks.
Last month, North Korea tested an intercontinental ballistic missile. This was the first test of a missile of this type since 2017 and according to satellite images, activity has increased in countries where nuclear tests are conducted in North Korea.
