The Skopje Criminal Court has sentenced Sasho Mijalkov, the former head of the Northern Macedonia secret police, to 12 years in prison.
He, along with some of his former accomplices, was found guilty of the criminal offenses of “Criminal Union”, “Illegal Eavesdropping” and “Destruction of Eavesdropping Equipment”. Goran Grujevski and Nikola Boskovski, two senior officials in the Security and Counterintelligence Directorate, were sentenced to 15 years in prison each.
Former Interior Minister Gordana Jankulovska was sentenced to 4 years in prison, while Vladimir Vallerov, Silvana Zlatkova and Vasil Isakovski, all secret service employees, were sentenced to 2 years in prison each. They have been found guilty of massive and illegal wiretapping, with the aim of establishing full political, economic, etc. control, in violation of human rights.
The victims are politicians, journalists, personalities from political, economic and business life, with an impact on society – it is said in the court ruling. Based on the accusation in the case codenamed “Target-Fortress”, Sasho Mijallkov, who was in charge of the Directorate for National Security, illegally intercepted over 4,000 telephone numbers, or about 20,000 people, without a decision court for such wiretaps.
The wiretapping scandal was uncovered in 2015 by Zoran Zaev, who was in opposition at the time.
