Northern Macedonia has seen a 51 per cent increase in coronavirus cases, according to data from the Institute of Public Health referring to data from January 3-9.
The Omicron variant of the coronavirus was detected in 68 percent of the samples analyzed in the Institute of Public Health’s Virology and Molecular Diagnosis laboratory.
According to the data of this institute, from January 3 to 9, 946 cases of reinfection with COVID-19 were reported, which is an increase of 7 percent compared to a week ago.
The Ministry of Health has said that people who have no symptoms even though they have tested positive for coronavirus, should stay in isolation for ten days. Meanwhile, those who show symptoms should be isolated for 21 days.
But, young people who are coming out positive, mostly are not having symptoms.
Valon Ademi, a student from Skopje who underwent a COVID-19 test because he needed to travel, said he was surprised when he tested positive, as he had no symptoms.
“I was very surprised that I came out positive, because I know why I came out positive, I have no symptoms. “I am a student, I have contact with people, but I do not know how I got infected,” he told Radio Free Europe.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the Infectious Diseases Commission discussed the proposal to shorten the isolation time for people who are positive but have no symptoms. However, this commission said that the decision on this issue will be taken in the coming days.
Also, the commission said that it is considering the possibility to change the beginning of the second half of the year, but the decision, as he said, will depend on the epidemiological situation in the country.
According to the data, as of January 10, 234,277 positive cases were registered in Northern Macedonia. Of this number, 8,042 people have died, while active cases are over 10,000.
