Mohammed bin Salman, the crown prince of Saudi Arabia who is considered the ‘de facto’ ruler of the kingdom, is visiting Turkey today, for the second time this year with President Tayyip Erdogan.
The media suggest that the meetings between the two had followed a pause after the macabre 2018 elimination of Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
Ankara expects one ““full normalization and re-establishment of pre-crisis ties,” a Turkish spokesman told Reuters on condition of anonymity. “A new era will begin.”
Jamal Khashoggi was assassinated by a gang of assassins inside the consulate in Istanbul, and Ankara was angry that he was mindlessly involved in the heinous crime, which Turkish officials have blamed on Saudi Arabia’s top leadership.
The brutal murder authorities went on trial in their own country but denied allegations that Prince Mohammed himself had ordered the plot. So Riyadh claimed that its security agents “had done with their head” in Istanbul.
But since April, Ankara and Riyadh have lowered their criticism, and Turkey has said it is suspending the trial in the absence of 26 Saudis suspected of being involved in Khashoggi’s assassination, and is transferring the case to Saudi Arabia.
In February, Erdogan also visited the United Arab Emirates for the first time in a decade, a close ally of Saudi Arabia. His visit was exchanged for that of the prince of Abu Dhabi, in Ankara last November, when the Emirates announced the $ 10 billion investment fund in Turkey.
